According to the 2026 AI Layoffs Report by Resume Genius, which surveyed 1,000 downsized employees, 53% of workers recently made redundant believe automation directly contributed to their job loss.

Data from the study reveals a significant gap between official employer explanations and frontline worker perceptions:

• Direct confirmation: 22% of laid-off employees were explicitly told automation replaced their specific role
• Unspoken suspicion: 31% suspect artificial intelligence was involved despite employers citing alternative reasons
• Official narratives: Employers most frequently cited company-wide budget cuts (37%) or corporate reorganisation (31%) to explain redundancies
• Broader business pressures: Economic conditions (27%) and department eliminations (25%) were also widely used as official justifications
• Industry concentration: 75% of technology workers and 73% of finance professionals believe AI played a direct role in their dismissal

Generational splits

The Resume Genius research highlights a pronounced generational divide in workforce perceptions regarding technological replacement. While 66% of Gen Z respondents suspect automation factored into their layoff, that proportion drops to 52% among Millennials and 46% among Gen X.
