Amazon revokes job offers over economic uncertainty

Dive Brief:

  • Amazon has rescinded job offers to an unspecified number of workers over “challenging economic conditions,” Amazon spokesperson Brad Glasser confirmed Friday to HR Dive.
  • “As we continue with our annual operating plan review, and in light of the challenging economic conditions, we’ve made the difficult decision to eliminate some roles in particular businesses for which we’ve extended offers but the candidates have not yet joined the company,” Glasser said in an emailed statement.
  • The decision affects a small number of roles, and the company plans to continue hiring in 2023, Glasser said.

Dive Insight:

Amazon’s decision to revoke job offers comes on the heels of larger layoffs and hiring freezes at the company, as well as across the tech industry.

In November, Amazon said it planned to lay off up to 10,000 workers, mostly in its retail operations, device division and human resources. The company previously confirmed it had frozen corporate hiring until an unknown time in 2023.

The downsizing efforts at Amazon follow recent reports of layoffs at other tech giants like Meta and Twitter, as well as hiring slowdowns at Microsoft and Alphabet.

And, more broadly, 81% of CHROs surveyed said they plan to greatly reduce their workforce in the next six months amid fears of an impending recession, according to the results of a PwC pulse survey released Nov. 2.
