Craigslist Defied Indeed: Now They're Likely Worth $1 Billion

Martin Burns

July 21, 2020

Craigslist, owned by founder Craig Newmark, and CEO Jim Buckmaster, is estimated to be worth at least one billion.

That's with "B".

The companies proposition is simple: they are where humans go to by & sell at a basic level. So much so that they have become a given. If you're hiring, Craigslist postings are almost a given. The price-point is so low that using it is almost automatic. The returns consistently prove the model. (This reported once posted a $25 ad for technical talent - during a recession - and made a $17,500 placement a few weeks later from one of the first respondents: ROI a-go-go).

An analysis by AIM Media Group, which focuses on the digital marketplace:

“Craigslist is the No. 1 classified advertising site in the world, both by revenue and by traffic. Although the collective worldwide Indeed.com sites generate more than $2 billion in annual revenue, it’s stunning that a single site can generate $1 billion in revenue, with more than 99 percent of that coming from the United States.”

It should be noted that Indeed employees over 10,000 people. Craigslist employees 50. The revenue-per-employee difference between the two companies is 100:1.

Craigslist wins.
