  • A lot more exciting than their name implies. The Boring Company is hiring in Austin. Maybe the rapidly growing city's newly-famous gridlock has a solution?

Rumor has it that "Austin Chalk" is geologically one of best soils for tunneling. Want to find out? Austin jobs now available.https://t.co/imlQMDfprJ

  • Along the same lines (one senses a plan), Elon Musk's other company (one of them), Tesla, is posting jobs for battery cell manufacturing in Austin.
  • GM is going on an electric car hiring spree, generating (get it??) 3,000 new jobs. Take that, Tony Stark! Err - sorry. Elon. Take that, Elon! Most of the new positions are remote, allowing GM to find candidates from a national talent pool. “We’re going to look for the best talent we can get and work around whatever situations there are to get that talent,” said Ken Morris, GM’s head of autonomous and electric vehicle division.
  • Ford wants in, too, adding 350 jobs at 2 plants in Michigan and Missouri to make electric vehicles.
  • Cybersecurity hiring continues to be a star performer, more than doubling in the last three quarters of 2020.

Retail/ Grocery

  • It's recurring theme: holiday hiring is happening, but slower than 2019, and Amazon, UPS, FedEx, Target lead the list of mega-hirers. That will likely remain consistent.
  • Kroger continues to hire and is using localized virtual job fairs as part of its approach

Notable seasonal upticks from 2019 hiring:

  • Michaels has announced 16,000 seasonal jobs (15,000 in 2019)
  • UPS announced 100,000 (95,000 in 2019)
  • FedEx announced 70,000 (55,000 last year)
  • 1-800-Flowers.com, Inc. will add 10,000 jobs (8,000 in 2019)
  • L Brands will add 4,000 (2019 N/A)

Healthcare

  • Humana commits to hiring 600 vets and 150 military spouses
  • The US Veterans Affairs Department has hired 58,000 healthcare employees since March 29th, and increased headcount by 4% over 2019 - and they are still at it.

World

  • China: Service sector recovery strengthened in October, and hiring picked up - firms hired more for the third month in a row and at the fastest pace since September 2019, indicating a strengthening recovery in a labor market hit hard earlier in the year.

Odds & Sods

  • The pandemic has created a number of fascinating new roles (pool-patrols at MGM, for example). And now: PPE Extenders. What are the qualifications again?
  • CNBC has mapped out what industries saw increased hiring in October vs September. Surprisingly good news for leisure and hospitality.
