Imagine two organizations identify an urgent need for the same new skill on Monday. At one, employees have closed the gap by Friday. At the other, employees are still developing the skill three weeks later.
For the business, the advantage of moving faster is clear: It can put a new technology to work sooner, move more quickly on a product launch or put employees' newly developed skills to productive use sooner.
While the comparison is hypothetical, the performance difference is real. Among organizations using AI in onboarding, training and development, those still piloting AI report a median of 20 days to close identified gaps in data science, digital skills and other specialty IT skills through training. For those optimizing AI, the median is just five days.
More AI training or higher learning budgets don't account for the difference: Both significant AI training and median learning budget per employee remain essentially flat across adoption stages. So, what might be helping some organizations move faster?
The data doesn't provide a definitive explanation, but it does give learning leaders three important questions to investigate in their own organizations:

It's tempting to look for speed inside the learning itself. Could the program be shorter? Could AI accelerate content development or delivery? Those questions matter, but they may start the investigation too late.
In June and July 2026, APQC surveyed 268 L&D professionals at the management level and above who are familiar with managing employee development. Respondents from organizations that significantly map employee skills to business or project requirements report shorter cycle times to close the specialty skill gaps measured in our survey and bring new hires to productivity.
