John Weir is Research Associate in Talent and Skills, Energy & Environment Institute, University of Hull

John currently works for the University of Hull Energy and Environment Institute (EEI) supporting a variety of areas and initiatives including:

The Centre for Sustainable Technologies (CSET) hybrid photovoltaic–thermoelectric power generation systems and low carbon heating systems
Development of a National Flood Centre
Providing expert advice to the governments led Future Homes initiative
In addition to his work with EEI, John works in the Aura team as an Offshore Wind specialist and in the Centre for Human Factors providing guidance on safety cultures including fatigue risk management and occupational stress risk in hazardous industries.

John is a qualified engineer with more than 40 years’ experience in working in high risk environments with the armed forces and in the energy sector. After leaving RAF Waddington in 2003 as an aircrew instructor, John joined the power sector as an Operational High Voltage Instructor before becoming E.ON’s Head of Operational Training responsible for the development of training solutions across power generation.
In 2012 he joined Centrica and became the Global Leaning and Development Director responsible for ensuring the capability and competence of staff working in Power Generation (renewable and conventional); Oil and Gas; Liquefied Natural Gas and Energy Marketing and Trading. John also supported the development of Centrica’s distributed energy Business Solutions Division helping organizations manage their energy by carrying out optimization and efficiency reviews and delivering practical solutions such as Combined Heat and Power; Solar and Battery Storage technologies.
