Workplace culture has emerged as one of the top reasons why US employees are turning down job offers and quitting their workplaces, as they opt for organisations that offer stability and respect.

These are the findings of Remote.co's latest poll among more than 3,000 employees in the US, which revealed the real reasons why candidates reject offers and leave jobs.

Low pay or inadequate benefits emerged as the top reason why employees reject job offers, as cited by 70% of the respondents.

Just close behind at 69% is toxic or misaligned culture, according to the findings. Other deal-breakers for jobseekers include:

  • Lack of work-life balance or the expectation to be always available (61%)
  • No remote jobs or flexible work options (58%)
  • Lack of job security or high turnover (50%)
  • Limited chances for career growth or advancement (37%)

"These numbers, outlined in the graphic below, show that workers aren't simply chasing salaries; they're looking for stability, trust, and respect," the report read.

Culture as a deciding factor

Meanwhile, culture also emerged as a strong reason behind employee departure, according to the report.

Nearly three in four (74%) respondents said a toxic company culture would make them quit or seriously consider it.

Having a bad boss or manager (67%) and feeling disrespected or undervalued at work (63%) were also cited as some of the top reasons that would make employees quit.
