Skills-based hiring is increasingly shaping how organizations in India approach talent acquisition. With the pace of technological change, the nature of jobs, and the expectations of the workforce, the relevance of the traditional hiring model based on degrees has diminished. The emphasis now is on the application rather than the qualification.

The rise of digital transformation has accelerated demand for future work skills, such as analytical thinking, adaptability, and digital proficiency. These capabilities are often developed through experience and continuous learning rather than formal education. Evidence suggests that the demand for digital and AI skills-based jobs in India has increased manifold, with hiring for these roles doubling over the past few years (NASSCOM, 2023).

The Limitations of Degree Based Hiring

Traditional hiring models have long relied on academic qualifications as a primary filter for candidate selection. Degrees were a measure of knowledge, discipline, and capability. However, this method has several limitations in the current workforce environment.

One limitation is the disconnect between academic learning and work requirements. Some jobs require skill sets that cannot be attained through academic learning. In such a case, there may be a disconnect between work requirements and employees' capabilities.

Another concern is the exclusion of capable candidates who may not possess formal qualifications but demonstrate strong competencies. Skills-based recruitment helps solve this problem by providing access to larger talent pools.

Most organizations in India are increasingly realizing that qualifications alone do not ensure a candidate's preparedness for a role. The realization has led them to turn to skill-based recruitment, which focuses on a candidate's ability to perform a specific task and contribute to organizational success.

The Rise of Skills Based Hiring in Modern Workplaces

The shift towards skill-based hiring reflects the broader shift in the work paradigm. Jobs are becoming increasingly specialized and fluid, requiring employees to be flexible enough to adapt to new technologies and systems. In this regard, hiring has to be based on skills rather than qualifications.

Competency-based hiring plays a key role in this transformation, as it involves selecting the specific skills, behaviors, and attributes necessary for the job. The approach helps businesses implement the talent acquisition strategy required for their business needs.

The growing importance of future-of-work skills has further reinforced this shift. Problem-solving skills, teamwork, and digital literacy are key competencies for success in a complex work environment. While academic credentials may not be an effective tool for evaluating these competencies, the hiring process can be more effective.

Industry trends also support this transition. The workforce transformation projects in India reveal the need for employees to continuously reskill and upskill to remain competitive in the labor force (NASSCOM, 2024).
